Functional Economic Market Areas: An economic note

This note has been produced by the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) to provide an overview of what it sees as Functional Economic Market Areas (FEMAs), where economic flows often overlap local authority boundaries and which broadly correspond to sub-regions or city regions. This note outlines the types of issues partners may wish to consider when identifying these areas.

Cycles of poverty, unemployment and low pay

This short report has been released by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation to summarise four pieces of work focusing on the low-pay/no-pay cycle of poverty. It examines current UK policy and practice and suggests ways to create longer lasting routes out of poverty, with a focus on job security and wage levels.

The four other reports are

· Employers’ role in the low-pay/no-pay cycle
· Work, poverty and benefit cycling
· How can parents escape from recurrent poverty?
· The impact of family and labour market changes on recurrent poverty

Strength Against Shocks: Low-income families and debt

This report has been released by the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr). It aims to increase understanding of what the expansion of household debt has meant for the lives of low-income families. Using evidence collected from interviews, the report concludes that the increased reliance on debt has created vulnerability during recession, and has not created opportunities for low-income families.

Good Foundations: Towards a low carbon, high well-being built environment

Released by New Economics, this report discusses how buildings affect our well-being, and what impact do buildings have on the environment. The report argues that more consideration should be given to the linkages between the built and physical environment and well-being through both policy development and professional practice.
